fun for second gradersBy Isla August
Our school newspaper has covered all the cool 4th grade field trips already, but now we have the second graders' wonderful trips and activities.
The first second grade field trip is a trip to Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford. They are splitting into groups and meeting up for lunch. They will see many animals and gather information for their animal reports and dioramas. The next exciting thing that they are doing is the animal reports that I just talked about. The students will make reports about the animals they are researching and create dioramas of them. Afterwards, they are going to set the dioramas out on their desks and invite the other second grade classes in. They will tell the classes about their animals and dioramas. Then if any students have unanswered questions, the students of Mrs. Allen’s class will stand by their dioramas with their papers and answer their questions. The other classes can walk around and ask questions to the students about their animals. Then, as their last fun activity for the season taking place on the last 21 days of school, Mrs. Allen will lay balloons out on the rug and pick a popsicle stick with a student's name. She will look at the name and call that student up. Then they can pick a balloon to pop. Inside the balloon there will be a fun activity card. That student will pick up the card and read it aloud to the class. They will do that activity later that day. There are 20 students in her class but 21 days. The answer to this problem is Mrs. Allen puts aside a balloon for herself. She will pop the balloon and there will be a short activity card inside. As you can see, the second grade calendar is full and guaranteed to be fun! fun night at steam nightBy Aubrey Gay
If you are in Wareham Elementary School on May 18th, at 5:30pm and you're looking for something fun to go to you should go to Steam Night! You and your family will have a great time there.
At Steam night they do many things. You can touch shed snake skin, you get to create your own sculptures with clay, make bookmarks, build with Legos, building blocks, and Duplo. You can also paint and draw in the art room. Steam night is till 7:00pm. Miss Colombo, and Miss Hayes are the ones who started Steam Night a year ago. The reason why they started Steam Night is because it wasn't something that they had when they were in elementary school, so they want us to be able to express ourselves and explore new things. Don't you wonder how many people come to Steam Night? Well, I sort of have an answer, Miss Hayes answered with,“I am thinking about 500 people will be here for Steam Night.” Scheduling another Steam Night this year was a no brainer because the first one was such a success. Miss Hayes said, "The first Steam night was last year.’’ The entire Innovation Hub and Cafeteria was packed with families having fun. When asked about what she likes best about Steam Night, Miss Hayes told me, “I think it's a lot of fun. Steam allows us to explore things that maybe we don't always get to and so I think setting it up is a lot of fun and it's also a lot of fun to see all the students exploring families exploring it. There's just so much to learn from seeing that's really cool to watch.” Steam night is an amazing way to show the school to your parents, to have fun, see some of your friends, and have a great time. The Wonderful Winter ConcertBy Isla Phillips
The Wareham Elementary School band and chorus recently had a concert on Wednesday, February 8th in the cafeteria. There were six songs played by the band called Hot Cross Buns, Aclareidal Alu, Band on Parade, Cardiff by the Sea, Down by the Station and finally Jingle Bells. After the band played, the chorus sang five songs. They were called My Red Sled, Here Comes the Snow, In This World Together, Perfect Winter Day, Everybody Going on a Slay Ride. This was the first time for these fourth graders to play at a concert. There were lots of family and friends in the audience.
When Mr. Hart, the music teacher for W.E.S. and the teacher for band and chorus, was interviewed, he was asked why he became a music teacher. He replied, “I was involved with music my whole life.” He also said that his favorite thing about being a music teacher is, “seeing all the kids.” He was also asked what his favorite instrument is, and he said he doesn't have a favorite but he loves the guitar. Mr. Hart also said he loves all grades but he loves 4th grade band and chorus the best. One cool fact is that his wife teaches pre-k through 5th grade as a music teacher also. I think for their first concert it was pretty good for the band and chorus. Their next concert will be sometime in June. |
Kindness “Rocks” On At WESBy Clarice Murdock
At Wareham Elementary School a wonderful activity is taking over the school, and it is all about spreading kindness. For the last several weeks, students and staff have participated in a project called The Kindness Rocks & Smiles Community project.
The project was brought to our school by Officer Baptiste, the school resource officer. He brought this event all the way from Falmouth to our school. One of the nicest people in the school, named Mrs. Myers, helped to organize the project. She set this event up with the help of the WES PBIS team. She said,”We saw a need for students and staff alike to engage in more acts of kindness, and be proud to be a part of the Wareham community; this project seemed like the perfect fit!”. This event helps kids show kindness around the school. Ever since the kindness rock came to this school, kids have been showing kindness more than before. Classes chose students to go to the Kindness rock banner, or to color in a postcard for others to be happy. The posters also are a way for kids to take a break and color and think about ways to spread kindness. One student from every class made beautiful postcards to send to people who need some kindness and happiness, to those who are sad and lonely. Teachers like seeing smiles around the school, so they participated too, coloring “kindness rocks” with positive messages. These rocks were placed by staff around the Wareham community. Local businesses were encouraged to post on Facebook and to perform an act of kindness if they found a rock. Businesses who participate will have a chance to get one of the banners to display at their location. This project helps kids become kinder and show more kindness around the community, so the kids can bring smiles across strangers' faces. |
sailing into historyBy Charlie Partridge
On May 18th, fourth graders from WES will be taking a field trip to Battleship Cove! Battleship Cove is located in Fall River, Massachusetts, on 5 Water St.
Battleship Cove has 5 National Historic Landmark US Naval ships. You can even see World War 2 boats. As you could probably guess, Battleship Cove is a maritime museum for the Navy. Battleship Cove is the biggest and most popular U.S Navy Museum! It takes 30 to 60 minutes to get through the whole thing. Some of the ships there include: The Hiddensee, The PT-617, and The PT-796. Some, sadly, are closed right now, like the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, and the PT-796, because of restoration initiatives. That means they are being fixed, so you cannot tour them right now. Battleship Cove has submarines, too. Like the USS Lionfish. The USS Lionfish was used as an attack submarine in World War 2. Fourth graders are going to get to see all of these amazing ships and maybe more! Coming Soon
